Medicare Supplement Plan G 2027: Coverage, Costs and What You Still Pay

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 29, 2026

Medicare Supplement Plan G in 2027 pays every gap in Original Medicare except the Part B deductible, which is projected at $292. After you pay that deductible, Plan G covers the rest of your Medicare-approved costs for the year, including hospital stays, the 20% Part B coinsurance and Part B excess charges, with any doctor who accepts Medicare.

Plan G has become the default Medicare Supplement plan for people new to Medicare because it is the most complete plan they are allowed to buy. Plan F, which also pays the Part B deductible, closed to new enrollees in 2020, which left Plan G as the top choice.

Here is what Plan G pays in 2027, what you still pay, what it costs, and when it makes sense to choose the high-deductible version instead. You can also read our earlier Medigap Plan G overview or see every plan side by side in the 2027 Medicare Supplement comparison chart.

How to Enroll in Plan G for 2027

1

Enroll in Part A and Part B. Plan G works on top of Original Medicare, so you need both parts first.

2

Use your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. For six months starting the month you are 65 or older and have Part B, any company must sell you Plan G at its standard price regardless of health.

3

Compare several companies. Plan G benefits are identical, so compare price, pricing method and rate history.

4

Add a Part D plan. Plan G does not cover prescriptions, so pick a drug plan during your Part D enrollment window.

Already on another supplement and want Plan G? You can apply at any time, but outside guaranteed issue situations most companies can ask health questions. See how to compare Medicare Supplement plans before you switch.

Bottom Line

Medicare Supplement Plan G in 2027 leaves you with one Medicare gap: the Part B deductible, projected at $292. It covers hospital stays, the 20% Part B coinsurance and excess charges with any Medicare doctor. Prices for identical Plan G coverage vary widely, so compare several companies, and consider high-deductible G only if you can comfortably cover $3,050.
